ADVOCACY – HIAS Inc.

I. Our Commitment to Community Advocacy

Hazleton Immigrant Advocacy Services Inc. (“HIAS Inc.”) was created to stand firmly beside immigrant families who need clarity, dignity, and a place where their concerns are taken seriously.
For us, advocacy is not a slogan or a program — it is a responsibility we carry every day in a community where many families face barriers of language, access, fear, misinformation, or lack of guidance.

Our role is to educate, support, accompany, and empower, always within the limits of the law and always with respect for each individual’s circumstances.

II. What Advocacy Means for HIAS Inc.

Our advocacy work is practical, local, and focused on the lived experiences of immigrants in Hazleton and surrounding areas. This includes:

  • helping individuals understand official requirements and available options,

  • guiding families through forms and processes that are often confusing,

  • offering educational sessions that explain rights, responsibilities, and safe pathways,

  • assisting community members in navigating agencies and public systems,

  • providing clear information when policies change or new procedures appear,

  • creating a space where questions are answered honestly, respectfully, and without judgment.

We support families through knowledge — not legal representation.
We give tools, not guarantees.
We inform, but we do not act as attorneys or offer legal defense.

III. Advocacy Rooted in Local Realities

Hazleton has a diverse and growing immigrant population with unique needs.
HIAS Inc. understands those needs because we work directly with the people affected:

  • parents seeking stability for their children,

  • long-time residents who are renewing or updating documents,

  • new arrivals who do not understand the systems or language,

  • individuals who want to avoid mistakes that may affect their future,

  • community members who simply need someone trustworthy to guide them.

Our advocacy reflects the voices, concerns, and experiences of the families we serve — not the assumptions of outsiders or institutions that do not live the day-to-day reality of Hazleton’s immigrant community.

IV. Respect, Clarity, and Protection

Every person who enters HIAS Inc. deserves respectful treatment, truthful information, and a process free of fear or confusion.
Our advocacy is grounded in:

  • accuracy — we verify information before sharing it,

  • honesty — we state clearly what we can and cannot do,

  • confidentiality — we treat personal information with care,

  • independence — we operate without influence from external agencies,

  • transparency — we communicate openly about procedures, delays, and limits.

HIAS Inc. does not exaggerate services, does not promise results, and does not create false expectations.
Our duty is to protect the community, not mislead it.

V. Educational Empowerment

One of the strongest forms of advocacy is education.
HIAS Inc. provides sessions, workshops, and one-on-one guidance that help individuals:

  • understand how official forms should be completed,

  • learn what rights they have in different situations,

  • prepare documents with accuracy,

  • recognize fraud and avoid dangerous misinformation,

  • stay informed when policies or procedures change.

An informed community is a safer, stronger, and more confident community.

VI. Advocacy Without Legal Representation

We clarify explicitly:

  • HIAS Inc. is not a law firm.

  • HIAS Inc. does not provide legal advice.

  • HIAS Inc. does not represent individuals before USCIS, ICE, DHS, DOS, NVC, or any government agency.
